Philippe Chalmin is a French professor of economics and a specialist in commodity markets. A neoclassical economist, he is the founder of the Cercle Cyclope, which has published a comprehensive report on the state and prospects of world commodity markets every year since 1986.
He is a graduate of HEC Paris (1974), has a degree in history (1977) and a doctorate in literature and humanities and history (1981).
He has been an associate professor at the University of Paris-Dauphine since 1994 and director of the Master’s degree in International Affairs 212 since 1999. He has also taught at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers.
He was economic advisor to the Euler group until 2002. He is a regular contributor to the Y’a pas que le CAC program on I-Télé and writes numerous columns for the press.
He has been a member of the Conseil d’analyse économique (Economic Analysis Council) reporting to the Prime Minister.
A specialist in the commodities market, he considers them to be a “curse”, using the example of Dutch disease. Each year he coordinates the publication of the Cyclope report (Cycles and orientations of products and trade) on world markets.
